Dozens of red dresses, jumpers and two-piece outfits have hung from the rainforest canopy along the trail that wraps Ward Lake for the latter half of May, which is the federally recognized month of awareness for the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples crisis that's been classified as an "epidemic" by the U.S. Department of Interior. Ketchikan Indian Community's Victim Services department raised the dresses as part of a grassroots, international art project that Jamie Black of Canada founded in 2010 to bring awareness for the staggering number of Indigenous women and people who are victims of abuse and violent crimes worldwide.
